B2B businesses are resilient: Positive Pivots amid COVID19

The COVID-19 outbreak rocked our worlds. It's safe to say that every person on this planet has now been affected in some way — whether it's something as small as the news they're reading, or something as huge as their business temporarily or permanently closing its doors.

With all these changes, we've also observed something else: the resiliency of the United States' small businesses. Small businesses are switching up everything from their daily practices to employee management to their business model overall to meet the needs of the new coronavirus economy.

Here are a few small B2B businesses we've seen take this situation and turn it around to help the community, their employees, and their business.

1. From sportswear to hospital gear

The MLB and sportswear retailer Fanatics have teamed up to create personal protective equipment for health care workers. Production quickly shifted from the pinstripe jerseys of the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies to pinstripe masks and gowns to meet a crucial need.

2. From supplying salons with shampoo to supplying digital resources and salesstrong>

Essations, a B2B supplier of hair products to salons all over the country and internationally, was recently on the NPR Podcast "The Indicator from Planet Money." Stephanie Luster, the company's President, was quick on her feet when salons started closing their doors due to social distancing. She prompted her salon partners to start creating digital videos demonstrating to their customers how to use products and look great during their new normal: video conferences. The videos directed customers to the Essations website to purchase directly, benefiting her company and its 29 employees, as well as the referring salon.

3. From B2B brews to B2C sights and digital happy hours

Alcohol sales have spiked (with as much as a 55% increase in the third week of March). But many breweries have still been affected by the closures of pubs they supply to. Many breweries have doubled-down on their employee focus, caring for them as much as possible, while others have shifted to digital happy hours and online sales.

VinePair spoke to 24 breweries about how they're making positive pivots. Read the story here.

In the upcoming weeks, we will now be sharing new content on a near-daily basis that is aimed at giving accessible resources, key information, practical tips to survive, and positive stories to look to when things are bleak.
