Story

Sy Garfinkel started Fabrique Innovations, a family-owned company based in NYC, over 40 years ago. What began as a fabric business diversified through the years and has developed consumer products for the home and garden. The company licenses logos of professional and college sports teams and characters from entertainment properties to create branded electronics, plush toys, umbrellas, retractable hoses, and more. One of the company’s most successful brands is Bitty Boomers — small Bluetooth speakers with sports team mascots and in the shape of character favorites from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Nickelodeon.

Because Fabrique Innovations’ main customers were retailers, when COVID-19 hit, the company needed new ways to find and connect with them online, as well as to sell in larger quantities.

Solution

The company joined Alibaba.com to reach small retailers for wholesale orders as part of its push into virtual sales. Justin Fisher, Director of Sales and Licensing, presented the opportunity of Alibaba.com to reach out to small and medium-sized B2B buyers around the world. He wanted first-mover advantage with these types of licensed products on the platform.

Success

After being on Alibaba.com for close to a year, Fabrique Innovations generates more than 100 inquiries each month from retailers in the US where they have licensing deals. The company receives average order sizes of around US $700 with some orders reaching over US $5,000. The company is able to transact with confidence using Trade Assurance, the built-in order protection service that allows customers to transact securely on the platform. Sy plans to secure licensing for other North American markets and will look to Alibaba.com to grow in those markets.
