Japanese food, known as Washoku in Japan, is enjoying an unprecedented boom in the global food market. Since UNESCO declared Japanese cuisine to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013, Japanese food begins to get more attention from foreign consumers. |
|
In 2016, there are over 115,000 Japanese restaurants outside of Japan, twice the amount in 2013. And Japanese food is one of the top 3 foreign cuisines alongside Chinese and Italian according to a 2014 survey published by JETRO, a Government agency. |
Researchers chose 3,000 foreigners aged 10-59 from Moscow, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Bangkok, Sao Paulo, and Dubai as respondents who have tasted Japanese food once. 66.3% of respondents choose Japanese food as their favorite food.
|
JETRO also investigate popular items of the Japanese food menu. Above half of the respondents choose Sushi and Sashimi as their most favorite Japanese cuisine. "Tempura" and "ramen" are also popular as Japanese food items.
|
It is also shown that Japanese cuisine attracts foreigners’ attention with a healthy image and good taste. |
From the left data of Japanese export market, we are able to understand that the share of fishery products and processed food takes almost half of the whole export industry. What’s more, it is estimated that the number of Japanese restaurants abroad was nearly 118,000 in October 2017.
With the recent Japanese food boom, it is really a good chance for Japan to further dig up the potential food market in foreign countries. The Japanese government also set JPY 1 trillion targets in 2020 in which processed food takes half of it.
To reach the target steadily, it is important to increase the trade amount of processed food with the benefit of the Japanese food boom. |
